Dr. B. Sonneveld (FALW, Athena Institute) is a senior researcher at the Amsterdam Centre for World Food Studies of the VU University Amsterdam. He worked in Indonesia for the International Institute for Land Reclamation and Improvement, from 1985 to 1987 and was employed by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) from 1987 until 1992, where he worked in land and water development projects in Latin America.
Sonneveld has a successful acquisition record and ample experience in managing research projects in Latin America, Asia, Middle East and Africa. Currently he coordinates projects on nomadic pastoralists in the Afar Region, Ethiopia, a water economy project in the Jordan River Basin with partners in Jordan, Lebanon and the Palestine Territories and an inland fishery and allotment garden project in Benin.
Sonneveld is a Visting Professor at the Abomey-Calavi University, Abomey-Calavi, Benin and a Visiting Professor at the Al-Quds University, Jeruzalem, Palestine Territories.
Sonneveld publishes articles in leading natural resource management and ecological economic journals. A central topic of his research is the modeling of the relation between land quality and agricultural production and eco-services.
Sonneveld coordinates minors on Global Food Security, Global Healt and Biomedical Health interventions and coordinates and teaches in the courses Agriculture for Food Security, Orienation on the M-variant and Telemedicine. He lectures in the Summer School course on Food and Water security. Sonneveld supervises various Bsc and Msc students and 3 PhD candidates. He enjoys the development of study projects with graduate and undergraduate students.
For his PhD thesis he received the AIID/World Bank Thesis Award and he won the price of ‘Best Paper’ on Land Degradation in Africa in a competition organized by the Journal Land Degradation and Development. His study on adaptation to climate change in Benin was selected as an example by CGIAR’s Climate Smart Agriculture.
