Caihong Liu is a PhD candidate in the Department of Water and Climate Risk of the Institute for Environmental Studies (IVM) at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU Amsterdam). She obtained her Master’s degree in meteorology at Sun Yat-sen University with a focus on investigating the role of jet stream played in extreme precipitation. Then her focus switched to atmospheric heatwaves owing to the globally catastrophic heatwaves in 2022. Caihong intended to quantitatively study the effect of the jet stream on heatwaves by using advanced climate models and machine learning techniques.
Now Caihong is working on her PhD project sponsored by the China Scholarship Council (CSC) and focuses on the impact of mid-latitude circulation on East Asian heatwaves. She will concentrate on the dynamic interaction of mid-latitude circulation and the concurrent extremes, and clarify the causal relationship between East Asian surface air temperature and mid-latitude circumglobal teleconnection.
Extreme heatwaves, climate dynamics, statistical analyses, climate models.
2020: Msc Meteorology, Sun Yat-sen University.
2016: BSc Atmospheric Science, Guangdong Ocean University.
