Personal profile

My work bridges the wisdom of legal and institutional scholars to make sense of governance norms and mechanisms with a long-standing interest in East Asian regions (China in particular).

Currently, my work is focused on two topics from institutional and comparative perspectives:

1). identifying difference and similarity in the way that government conducts are regulated in selected regions in Asia and Europe, focusing on the development of (rule of) law therein;

2) examining the impacts of digitalisation and artificial intelligence technologies on State governance in China and Europe, focusing on the ‘smart courts’ development in China and the legal control of the government applications of AI technologies.

My academic services also extend to:

1). the peer-reviewed academic journal the Cross Cultural Human Rights Review (Managing Editor) that bridges cross-cultural human rights scholarship (especially from Global South) to the Northern and global readership;

and 2). the public webinar series European Network for Rule of Law (EnRol!) where women academics and practitioners are regularly invited to share with the public their observations on the rule of law and human rights situations across the world.

Apart from research work, I have been offering and coordinating the cross-disciplinary course “Law, Governance and Human Rights in Today’s China” to VU and UvA postgraduate and honours students since 2020.

This course is one of the few university offerings from which students can learn about not only the legal and governance systems in China, but also its political, historical and social contexts as a whole.
