Jolien Zevalkink is a developmental psychologist and social anthropologist. She is a senior lecturer  at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and has been teaching at the Radboud University Nijmegen. Her primary research interest is in developmental psychopathology, with particular emphasis on attachment disorganization, mentalising problems, the effect of clinical interventions, and the influence of family characteristics on the development of internalising behaviour problems in children and adolescents. During her teaching career she also worked in the Netherlands Psychoanalytic Institute, where she supervised two PhD projects. The first project focused on the effectiveness of psychoanalysis and psychoanalytic psychotherapy. The second project focused on the psychometric qualities of a widely used screening instrument for depression (BDI-II). At the moment, she is involved in two PhD projects conducted by therapists: process assessment of object representations during psychoanalytic psychotherapy and emotion regulation in children with and without dyscalculia. She is the author of several papers in the field of general developmental psychology and developmental psychopathology.

Tijdens haar studie ontwikkelingspsychologie heeft Jolien Zevalkink deelgenomen aan een longitudinaal project over sociale en emotionele ontwikkeling van 0-12 jaar oude kinderen. Dit project was gebaseerd op een experimentele interventiestudie bij 100 ouder-baby paren uitgevoerd door Marianne Riksen-Walraven. Het project heeft haar geïnspireerd om sociale antropologie te gaan studeren en veldonderzoek te doen naar de kwaliteit van de relatie tussen ouder en kind vanuit een breed perspectief. Haar promotieonderzoek over gehechtheid tussen 80 moeders en hun 0-5 jaar oude kinderen in Bandung (Indonesië) is een logisch vervolg gebleken. Vervolgens heeft zij deelgenomen aan een interventiestudie (‘Instapje’) bij 76 Surinaamse moeders en hun peuters door tijdens huisbezoeken gegevens te verzamelen over mogelijke verbeteringen in de kwaliteit van de ondersteuning van de moeder en de cognitieve ontwikkeling van het kind. Na haar promotie heeft Jolien Zevalkink gewerkt als onderwijskundige op de Radboud Universiteit Nijmegen en de Vrije Universiteit in projecten die als doel hadden het activerend onderwijs op de universiteit op gang te brengen. Vervolgens heeft zij enige tijd als post-doc bij de afdeling Algemene Pedagogiek in Leiden meegeschreven met subsidie-aanvragen en heeft zij de Europees gefinancierde ESF workshop voor experts georganiseerd, getiteld: ‘Attachment disorganisation and psychopathology in development’. Vanaf 2000 heeft zij 12.5 jaar gewerkt op het Nederlands Psychoanalytisch Instituut als afdelingshoofd Onderzoek, Kwaliteitszorg en Kennisoverdracht. In deze periode heeft zij twee PhD-projecten begeleid. Het ene project richtte zich op de effectiviteit van psychoanalyse en psychoanalytische psychotherapie. Het andere project richtte zich op de psychometrische kwaliteiten van een veelgebruikt screeningsinstrument gericht op depressie (BDI-II). Tevens is zij betrokken geweest bij het ontwikkelen van mentaliseren bevorderende therapie voor kinderen. Dit betreft een interventie die in boekvorm is verschenen voor de Nederlandse en Engelstalige markt. Ze is een erkend codeur van verschillende gehechtheidsinstrumenten: Gehechtheidsverhalen (Attachment Story Completion Task), Gehechtheidsorteertaak (Attachment Q-sort) en het Gehechtheidsbiografisch Interview (Adult Attachment Interview).
