Dr. Ellen Langemeijer studied Molecular and Cellular Biology at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, where she graduated in 1998. Upon graduation, she worked for six years at Biotech company Galapagos Genomics as a scientist on diverse research projects, including the development of the patented adenoviral SilenceSelect knock-down library.
Langemeijer returned to the VU in 2005 for her PhD research within the Medicinal Chemistry research group. Supervised by Prof. Martine Smit, she worked on oncomodulatory signaling, by two herpesvirus-encoded G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs), US28 and UL33. Subsequently, she was a post-doctoral researcher in the group of Prof. Ad IJzerman at Leiden University, studying functional selectivity of ligands for the adenosine receptors, also GPCRs.
Early 2013, Langemeijer returned to the Department of Chemistry and Pharmaceutical Sciences (C&PS) at Vrije Universiteit, joining Molecular and Computational Toxicology as project manager for SafeSciMET; an European Modular Education and Training Programme in Safety Sciences for Medicines, coordinated by Prof. Nico Vermeulen.
From July 2013 - 2018, Langemeijer was managing director of the Amsterdam Institute for Molecules, Medicines and Systems (AIMMS) as well. As of 2018, she manages several projects, like the MSCA-ITN in3, short for Integrating In vitro and In silico tools for toxicological screening, in the group of Prof. Paul Jennings at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam.
As the C&FS EU Project manager Ellen is / has been involved in recent projects like EU-ToxRisk, RDT, RISKHUNT3R and VHP4Safety within MolTox, and MSCA-ITN ONCORNET2.0 with Martine Smit (MedChem, C&FS) and the EU-funded FREIA-project with Majorie van Duursen (Environment & Health, ALIFE).
