Evelyn Ersanilli is an assistant professor in sociology at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU).  She has a PhD in Sociology from the VU and an MSc in Interdisciplinary Social Sciences from Utrecht University.  She has worked a Senior Researcher at the WZB Berlin Social Science Research Centre, and as Research Officer and as Departmental Lecturer on the MSc in Migration Studies at the International  Migration Institute of the University of Oxford. She was an associate member of Nuffield College, University of Oxford.

She has given public lectures on immigration and integration in the Netherlands and intra-EU mobility.

Research

Evelyn Ersanilli’s research focuses on the position of immigrants and their descendants in Western Europe.  She focuses in particular on issues of citizenship, identity and partner choice. Her work addresses questions such as “How does citizenship legislation affect naturalization decisions?”, “How do citizenship policies affect identification with the residence and origin country?”, “Why do the children of migrant marry people from the parents’ country of origin?” and “how does partner choice among the children of immigrants relate to their socio-economic position?”.

Her work has been published in journals such as International Migration Review, West European Politics and the Journal of Ethnic and Migration Studies.

Teaching

Evelyn Ersanilli’s teaching interests are research methods and statistics. She enjoys thinking about ways to encourage student learning and help students become critical consumers and producers of social scientific research. In 2014, she was awarded a Teaching Excellence Award by the Social Sciences Division of the University of Oxford.

At the VU she teaches on both the Bachelor and Master in Sociology.
