Personal information

Femke Ruitenbeek-Bart is professor of Private Law (liability law) at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. In 2016, after practicing law (including supreme court litigation) for over a decade, she returned to her alma mater (Erasmus School of Law, Rotterdam) for a PhD trajectory: an empirical-legal study on the role of the tortfeasor in personal injury cases. She obtained her PhD in 2023 and was appointed at VU as of September 1, 2025.

Research

The common thread through Femke Ruitenbeek's research activities is to enhance the responsivity of private law: how can the law / legal practice better respond to the justice needs of the people involved. Her approach to private law is both empirical and multidisciplinary, and focuses on liability law in personal injury cases. The leading question is how tort law can best take into account the needs of the people involved (both victims and those responsible).

Teaching

Femke Ruitenbeek is involved in both bachelor and master courses on the law of obligations, with an emphasis on liability law, and courses on civil procedural law (litigation). She is also involved in the master program that specializes in conflictmanagement (Afstudeerrichting Conflicthantering, rechtspraak en mediation), and as a lecturer in VU Law Academy programs on conflictmanagement.
