Research

Zijn onderzoek is ingebed in het VU-onderzoeksinstituut CLUE+ for Culture, Cognition, History and Heritage.

Schmidt is engaged in critical research into the social, cultural and historical dimensions of architecture understood as the design, layout and transformation of the living environment. In this, architecture is interpreted as a cultural and social act in which not only architects, styles and large monuments are essential, but all actors who play a part in the conceptualisation, appropriation and transformation of the physical and living environment. Specifically, the focus is on the design, building practices, use and appreciation of the built environment (and of buildings) in the early modern and modern period. In his research Schmidt makes use of insights from the history of art and architecture, urban planning, social, history of ideas and mentality, cultural history and heritage studies. Schmidt contributes to the field of architectural history as a member of the European Architectural History Network (EAHN), the Society of Architectural Historians (SAH) and presents papers on his research; as editor of the Landscape and Heritage Studies (LHS, AUP), and as referee and advisor on several scientific committees. From 2002 to 2008 and from 2012 to mid-2020 he was editor of the Bulletin KNOB. Currently, he participates in the Network Architecture and Society in an Age of Reform (1760-1840) (AHRC, University Liverpool), and the Centre for Privacy Studies, University of Copenhagen. His research is embedded in the VU research institute CLUE+ for Culture, Cognition, History and Heritage.

Teaching

At the VU, Freek Schmidt teaches the history of the designed and built environment of the Netherlands in an international perspective, which is a natural focus of the MKDA Bachelor's degree and the Master's specialisation in Architectural History (Arts & Culture). The VU occupies a recognised place in the field of architectural history as a research centre and institute where socially involved and development-oriented experts and critics are trained. Within the subjects, the coherence between architecture, urban planning and landscape architecture is pursued that is attuned to current developments and debates in the field of research and in society. A great deal of attention is paid to material culture and design where it touches on the design of architecture, the environment and home cultures.

Outside the Vrije Universiteit, Schmidt participates in the Re-scape colloquium, a collaboration in the field of educational exchange at graduate level (with TU Delft, RU Leiden and EU Rotterdam) and regularly performs at PhD courses within the research school Art History (OSK).
