Research

Dr. Gaila Jehoel holds a PhD from the University of Amsterdam with a thesis entitled 'Het culturele netwerk van Jan van Scorel: schilder, kanunnik, ondernemer en kosmopoliet' (2019). Her specialities include Jan van Scorel (1495-1562), (artist) networks, the sixteenth century, connossoirship, art fairs and the art market, early modern art history, production and techniques of works of art, workshop practices, material and visual culture, photography, modern and contemporary design and (teaching policy in) Art Education. 

She obtained two master degrees, one in Art History and the other in Art, Markets and Connoissoirship at the Vrije Universiteit with a minor in Old Master Paintings from the University of Amsterdam. At ArtEZ Arnhem, University of the Arts she studied Product Design as well as Fine Arts and Design in Education. At the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam she studied Jewellery- Linking Bodies and additionally obtained her degree in Goldsmithing at the Vakschool Schoonhoven. This combined training resulted in an object-based researcher with a thorough knowledge about technical aspects and the role and importance of material (the fourth dimension) in art and design.

For the Hanze University of Applied Sciences in Groningen she developed the interdisciplinary master 'Operational Leadership in Performing Arts' for LMIPA Amsterdam, which was accredited by NVAO in 2021. She was selected by the Faculty of Humanities for following the Educational Leadership Programma from the VU Academic Centre for Human Behaviour and Movement and LEARN! after which she developed the symposium Dekoloniseer het kunstcurriculum in het voortgezet onderwijs in October 2022.

Teaching

Working at the Vrije Universiteit since 2020 she taught Onderzoeksvaardigheden at the bachelor MKDA (Media, Kunst, Design en Architectuur) and Kunst, Markt en Connaisseurschap: Hedendaagse praktijk van Kunst, Markt en Connaisseurschap at the master Kunst, Markt en Connaisseurschap. At Amsterstam University College (AUC), she teached The Art Market & Cultural Policy. Gaila has been a teacher in material and visual culture, art education, and art history for over more then twenty years.
