Govert Somsen is full professor of Biomolecular Analysis/Analytical Chemistry at Vrije Universteit (VU) Amsterdam since 2013. He obtained his doctorate in Analytical Chemistry and Applied Spectroscopy at VU in 1997, and subsequently was assistant and associate professor at the University of Groningen (1996-2001) and at Utrecht University (2001-2012).

Somsen's main expertise and current research interests are on hyphenated concepts in separation science directed to the characterization of (bio)polymers and complex mixtures, with emphasis on revealing molecuar heterogeneity. His group made significant contributions to the development, optimization and application of coupled analytical techniques combining selective liquid-phase separations with mass spectrometry, optical spectroscopy and bioactivity assays. He is (co-)author of over 230 papers in these fields and has an H index of 43 (Dec 2023). He is editor of Journal of Chromatography B and has (co-)organized a number of international symposia in the field of analytical separations. He is co-founder of the Center of Analytical Sciences Amsterdam (CASA), the Dutch focal point for excellence in analytical research and education.
