Personal information

Hanna Dijkstra is a PhD candidate looking at the societal and business case for preventing plastic pollution and managing marine litter. She work within the Environmental Economics department of the Institute for Environmental Studies at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. She is involved in research activities, teaching assistance and is working within a consortium of EU stakeholders to advance research and methods to manage marine litter and pollution (CLAIM project website : http://www.claim-h2020project.eu/).

She previously was a junior researcher in the Environmental Economics department at the Institute for Environmental Studies (IVM). She had researched the effectiveness of marine-protected areas (MPAs) and conducted scoping reports for WWF's case study sites of the Zambezi river basin and the Chaco-Pantanal. 

Hanna conducted field research in Palau for her MSc thesis, as part of a larger project funded by BMUB and spearheaded by The Nature Conservancy, looking at ecosystem based adaptation (EbA) in Pacific islands. Her project focused on socio-economic valuation of the ecosystem, and included a choice experiment as well as an extensive household survey. She completed her Bachelor’s degree at the University of California, Santa Barbara and double majored in Environmental Studies and Communication.
