Personal profile

Research

I am a political theorist of European integration with a multidisciplinary background in political philosophy, political science, and public administration.

I am fascinated with the ideals that underpin modern democracies and how European integration challenges them. My research is driven by a desire to understand why democracy became the accepted form of rule and how we might imagine democratic EU governance. To achieve a better understanding, I am firmly committed to approaches that combine empirical insights about political rule with philosophical reflections on their legitimacy.

I have published on the democratic deficit, EU legitimacy, political realism, and the EU as a demoi-cracy. In my current research, I shifted my attention from constitutional questions to institutional ones. I am particularly interested in the institutionalisation of democratic accountability in EU decision-making after the Euro-crisis, especially during the Brexit negotiations.

Teaching

Through my teaching, I aim to convey my enthusiasm for political theory and explain its relevance for understanding a rapidly changing world. During my tenures at Rotterdam, Exeter, Leiden and Amsterdam, I had the pleasure to teach courses in international political theory, political science theory, the philosophy of public administration and EU-studies at both the bachelors’ and masters’ level. I cemented these experiences with official Dutch and British teaching accreditation.

I am currently supervising several master thesis students.
