Born and raised in Brazil, Jessica is a product of international forced displacement. Due to her personal background and the inequalities of the country where she grew up, Jessica developed an urge for social and legal justice from a young age. Since then, she has dedicated herself to learning and promoting human rights, particularly for asylum seekers. Jessica was a lawyer in Brazil for more than five years and provided legal advice for refugees and asylum seekers. After concluding a master’s degree in Public International Law, she is now starting a PhD research between Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and JLU Giessen (‘co-tutelle’), cooperating with the Amsterdam Centre for Migration and Refugee Law and the research consortium MeDiMi. She hopes to make a significant change regarding pushback policies and collective expulsion cases at European borders.
Jessica's research topic is about the litigation of governments at the European Court of Human Rights, particularly in relation to articles expressly designed to protect migrants from expulsion. The aim of her study is to understand how governments shape the jurisprudence of these articles according to their own interests.
