drs. Johan Smits, MA

Personal profile

My NWO-funded research project 'Nations and the life of mind' focusses on the role of Protestant academic theologians in the construction and communication of religious discourses on the nation. My focus is on the period 1820-1870 and on Germanophone universities. In my project, I employ methods from 'social network analysis' and traditional close reading methodology.

As a teacher of Religious Education at the Van Lodensteincollege, Amersfoort, I work together with students between 12 and 18 years old in studying the Bible, the Christian tradition and religiosity in society.
