Jose D. Henao Casas is a Postdoctoral Researcher on groundwater drought and adaptation at the Water and Climate Risk department of the Institute for Environmental Studies (IVM) of VU Amsterdam. He has a background in hydrogeology.
His research focuses on the impacts of drought on groundwater systems in the Netherlands, and the implementation of solutions that can contribute to replenishing groundwater storage without posing flood risk. He conducts this research in the frame of two projects, namely GroundedExtremes and RESHAPE and uses primarily data and geospatial analysis and groundwater modelling.
Prior to his postdoctoral research, he investigated the effects of large-scale managed aquifer recharge (MAR) systems in rural Spain on an over-exploited aquifer (Los Arenales) for his PhD thesis. He also worked for more than two years as a technical coordinator of a groundwater monitoring programme in Colombia, and as water resources specialist employing primarily geospatial tools and data analysis.
Apart from his current areas of research, he also has expertise and interest in the vadose zone and soil science.
