Jaap Timmer is socioloog en verbonden aan de afdeling Bestuurswetenschap & Politicologie. Hij doet sinds 1991 onderzoek naar politie- en veiligheids­vraagstukken in het bijzonder naar vraagstukken van geweld in politiewerk. Timmer geeft onderwijs in de bachelor Bestuur & Organisatie en in de master Besturen van Veiligheid. Hij is gastdocent aan onder meer de Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, de Politieacademie en de Université de Pau & des Pays de l'Adour. Timmer is lid van de Adviescommissie Grondrechten en Functie-uitoefening Ambtenaren (AGFA) en van de Raad van Nesteliers, adviesraad van de Commandant der Koninklijke Marechaussee. Hij is daarnaast vrijwillig schaapsherder.

Jaap Timmer is a sociologist at the department of Policitical Science & Public Administration of the Faculty of Social Sciences at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. In 1991 he started his research on police and security matters, especially on violence and the use of force in police work. Timmer teaches in the bachelor Public Administration & Organizational Science and in the master Governance of Security. He is a visiting professor at among others the KU Leuven, the Netherlands Politie Academy and the Université de Pau & des Pays de l'Adour. Timmer is a member of the Advisory Council Fundamental Rights and Functioning of Civil Servants and of the Council of ‘Nesteliers’, advisory council to the Commander of the Royal Marechaussee. He is also a voluntary shepherd.
