Jacobien Rutgers is URC hoogleraar Europees privaatrecht. Zij heeft Nederlands recht gestudeerd aan de Rijksuniversiteit Groningen. Nadat zij gepromoveerd is op ‘International Reservation of Title Clauses, A Study of Dutch, French and German Private International Law in the Light of European Law’ aan het Europees Universitair Instituut (EUI, Florence) in 1998, heeft zij vier jaar in de advocatuur gewerkt bij Houthoff Buruma. Vervolgens heeft zij aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam gewerkt als universitair hoofddocent (Europees en internationaal) privaatrecht. Zij is onder andere lid van het bestuur van de European Society for Contract Law (SECOLA) en lid van het comitato dei referee van het Osservatorio del diritto civile e commerciale.
Jacobien Rutgers is URC professor of European Private Law. She studied in Groningen. After obtaining her PhD (International Reservation of Title Clauses, A Study of Dutch, French and German Private International Law in the Light of European Law) at the European University Institute (EUI, Florence), she practiced in one of the major law firms in the Netherlands for four years. Subsequently she was a senior lecturer at the Universiteit van Amsterdam, where she taught inter alia Dutch property law, European private law and Private International Law. She is amongst other things a member of the board of the European Society for Contract Law (SECOLA) and a member of the comitato dei referee of the Osservatorio del diritto civile e commerciale.
Research
Haar onderzoek richt zich op de interactive tussen national Privaatrecht, Europees recht en internationaal Privaatrecht. Aandachtsgebieden binnen dit onderzoek zijn (i) het contractenrecht als instrument om de welvaartstaat te reguleren, (ii) de handhaving van het consumentenrecht vanuit een national en internationaal perspectief en (iii) rechtskeuze in internationale overeenkomsten.
Her research focuses on the interaction between national private law, European law and private international law. She has a particular interest in (i) contract law as an instrument to organize the welfare state and (ii) the enforcement of consumer law from a national and international perspective and (iii) choice of law in international contracts.
