Personal profile

Research

I specialize in ancient Near Eastern history and culture, in particular in the social, legal, political and economic history of Babylonia in the first millennium BC.

In the past years I have conducted research projects on the position of Babylonian temples vis-à-vis the state (2003-2008), and on local and international trade (2008-2011). Currently I lead a Vidi-project (2014-2019) on taxation and administration in the Achaemenid Empire.

Other recurrent topics in my research are the legal history of Mesopotamia, monetary standards, money, gold and silver, as well as personal status, labour and various forms of dependency in the ancient Near East.

Teaching

I teach courses in ancient Near Eastern history and culture as well as Akkadian (Assyrian and Babylonian) language courses on all levels. In addition to classes that match my research interests in Near Eastern social, economic and legal history, I am fond of teaching on ancient Near Eastern literature and religion. The oldest tales of humankind are full of wisdom; they explore life and the human condition. The Gilgamesh epic, an extraordinary piece that belongs to the classic canon of world literature, keeps inspiring artists, scientists and performers until today.

Until the end of my Vidi project in 2019, Rients de Boer takes over a part of my teaching duties.

In 2018/19 I will teach an introduction to Sumerian, followed by a beginner's reading course Sumerian.

I am the coordinator of the faculty minor “Languages and Cultures of the Ancient Near East”.
