I specialize in ancient Near Eastern history and culture, in particular in the social, legal, political and economic history of Babylonia in the first millennium BC.
I have conducted research projects on the position of Babylonian temples vis-à-vis the state (2003-2008), on local and international trade (2008-2011), and I lead a Vidi-project (2014-2019) on taxation and administration in the Achaemenid Empire.
Other recurrent topics in my research are the state in ancient Babylonia, the legal history of Mesopotamia, monetary standards, money, gold and silver, as well as personal status, labour and various forms of dependency in the ancient Near East.
