Personal profile

Personal information

Lars de Ruig is a PhD researcher at the department of Water and Climate Risk of the Institute for Environmental Studies (IVM) at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. He has a background in Earth Sciences and Economics at VU Amsterdam, with a particular interest for interdisciplinary research. Furthermore, he is specialized in flood risk management and modelling. His master thesis focused on coastal vulnerabilities, flood risk modelling and the economic evaluation of potential coastal flood adaptation measures including a case study of Los Angeles County, in collaboration with USC Sea Grant and USGS.

Research

As a PhD researcher, Lars de Ruig will focus on flood risk adaptation. The first aim is to analyze the effects of applying different spatial and temporal scale in the economic evaluation of adaptation measures, strategies and pathways. The second aim is to analyze the interaction in adaptive behaviour of different flood risk related agents by applying an Agent-Based modelling approach. The emergence between these agents (e.g., governments, homeowners and flood insurance) and external drivers (e.g., socio-economic growth and climate change) can provide insights on how certain policies settings and insurance markets can stimulate adaptive behaviour.

Education

2016: MSc Earth Sciences and Economics at VU Amsterdam.

2014: BSc Future Planet Studies at the University of Amsterdam (UvA), major in Earth Sciences and Economics at VU Amsterdam.
