Research Interests
• Carbon cycling at high latitudes, specifically the vulnerability of permafrost carbon under climate warming
• Development and application of isotope and biomarker methods, in particular compound-specific isotope analysis, to study organic matter fluxes from land to sea
• Organic matter interactions with mineral matrices

Field expertise
• Field work on the lower Kolyma and coastal East Siberian Sea, July-August 2018, in collaboration with the Northeast Science Station in Cherskiy, Siberia
• Yukon Coast 2017 expedition to Herschel Island and permafrost thaw slump sites on the Peel Plateau, NWT, in collaboration with scientists from Alfred Wegener Institute Potsdam and from University of Alberta, Canada
• Swedish-Russian-US Investigation of Carbon-Climate-Cryosphere Interactions in the East Siberian Arctic Ocean 2014 (SWERUS C-3) on I/B ODEN, main tasks onboard:
Sediment core collection, post-processing and storage, Oxygen microelectrode measurements in sediment samples

• Field campaign to Zackenberg Research Station, Northeastern Greenland, in summer 2019 funded by INTERACT

Laboratory expertise
• Solvent extraction (Soxhlet, ASE, ultrasonic, microwave), clean-up and purification of lipids
• Microwave-assisted CuO-oxidation for lignin phenols, cutin acids etc.
• Chromatographic analysis of lipid and CuO extracts (GC-MS, GC-FID)
• Isolation of terrestrial biomarkers for compound-specific radiocarbon analysis (pcGC)
• Compound-specific stable hydrogen isotope measurements (GCirMS)
• Preparation of sediment samples for carbon concentration and isotope measurements
• Measurement of the mineral-specific surface area of sediment samples
• Radioisotope analysis for sediment core chronology (210Pb, 226Ra)
• Analysis of carbon species from aerosol filters
• Preparation of water samples for 14C analysis of DIC (extraction and graphitization)
• Analysis of dissolved noble gases in groundwater by mass spectrometry
• Competence with a range of analyzer, visualization and mapping software
