Projects: Marlies works on the numerical modelling of thermal processes in the Earth’s crust and lithosphere. Her research focuses on the effects of processes like fault movements, groundwater flow, mantle upwelling and climate change on the thermal field in the crust. Results from these numerical models are helpful when reconstructing the geological history of a region using thermo-chronological data. Furthermore, subsurface temperatures affect the strength of the crust, which in turn controls the amount and rate of deformation. Also the formation of oil and gas and the availability of geothermal energy are temperature dependent.

 

Marlies teaches mathematics (BSc), physics (BSc), tectonic geomorphology (MSc), geothermal energy (MSc) and numerical modelling of pressure-temperature-time during orogenesis (MSc).
