Chiel van der Veen is an assistant professor (tenureed) in Educational Sciences at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, the Netherlands. His current research focuses on dialogic classroom talk in primary and higher education, play-based learning,  and the development of children's social competencies (including oral communication, theory of mind, and social status). He holds a Doctor's degree (PhD) in Educational Scienes, a Master's degree (MSc) in Theory and Research in Education (cum laude) and a Bachelor's degree (BSc) in Primary Teacher Education.

 

From July until September 2015 he was appointed as visiting scholar at Clark University, department of Education with prof.dr. Sarah Michaels. He is PI/co-PI of multiple NRO-funded research projects,  co-PI of a ZonMw project, Comenius Teaching Fellow, supervisor of multiple PhD-projects (Eline van Rossum, Elizabeth Wynberg, Pablo Muruzábal Lamberti, Mireille Smits, Jannette Prins, and Iris Bogaers) and editorial board member of 'de Wereld van het Jonge Kind' and 'Pedagogiek'. He is a member of the academic council of Child and Family Blog.
