Manuela Kalsky is a Professor at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (Edward Schillebeeckx Chair for Theology and Society) and founder/president of the board of the multimedia dialogue platform Nieuwwij.nl in the Netherlands. She was a visiting professor at the Academy of World Religions (Hamburg University). As a well-known scholar of Religion, Public Theology and Gender and Diversity Studies she is regularly involved in the public debate on multicultural and multireligious issues in Dutch society. She has published numerous articles and books on related themes.


Prof. Kalsky’s research in recent years has focused primarily on religion in a pluralist society. Together with prof. Van der Braak she led the NWO-funded research project ‘Multiple religious belonging: hermeneutical and empirical explorations of hybrid religiosity’ at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (2013-2018). From 2018-2021 she is in charge of the research program 'Theology of the good life for all. Contributions from Dominican and transreligious perspectives'. In 2020 she published, as a co-editor the book: Fullness of Life and Justice for All. Dominican perspectives (ATP Press, Australia) As the director of the Dominican Study Centre for Theology and Society (DSTS) she published books, aimed at a wider audience interested in the impact of religion in society. 

Manuela Kalsky initiated the online dialogue platform Nieuwwij.nl (new we) with the aim of building relationships between people of different ethnic and religious backgrounds in Dutch society. 'Connect the differences' is the leading motto of this online and offline project that want to prevent and to limit polarisation in society and stimulate encounters between people of different cultures and worldviews.
