Personal profile

Personal information

Dear reader,

Welcome to my webpage.

I am senior lecturer and associate professor for Design History and Theory in the BA and MA programs Arts and Culture of the Faculty of Humanities at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam.

As an all round historian in Design, Material Culture and Decorative Art – including the history of interior design, furniture, metalwork, ceramics, glass, graphic design, textiles, and so on – I search to integrate historical knowledge, current theoretical viewpoints, and developments in contemporary society. My research connects design with visual art, architecture, popular culture, and cultural variety. My publications explore design as an engaged material and cultural expression in society in several ways. Gender is a productive analytical and critical perspective for the expression of design-related topics. I find it also important to reflect on design, nature and biotechnology; to focus on cross-cultural encounters related to design and crafts; and to create awareness of the blurring of boundaries between different visual media.

A recent publication is the e-book of the EU large scale collaborative project Modern Movement Women: Women Architects, Designers and Engineers 1918-2018, at https://omp.zrc-sazu.si/zalozba-zrc/catalog/book/2(online 22 December 2017).

A recent article with co-author Yoko Takagi is: ‘Tokyo Halloween on the Street: Japanese Dressing Up between Bricolage and Authenticity’, Dress. Journal of the Costume Society of America vol. 43 nr. 1 (Spring 2017), 1-21; at http://dx.doi.org/10.1080/03612112.2017.1290189
