Michiel Ingels is a PhD Candidate at the department of Environmental Economics at the Institute of Environmental studies (IVM) at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. He has a background in economics from Wageningen University & Research (BSc) with a focus on environmental economics and finance; and in econometrics from Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (MSc) with a focus on climate econometrics.

Prior to joining IVM as a PhD candidate, he has worked at IVM as a research assistant, focusing on simulating synthetic populations for the COASTMOVE project.

His PhD research revolves around climate risk insurance, specifically exploring strategies to mitigate the impact of flooding. He is focusing on flood insurance for businesses, including coverage for business interruption. His primary research interest lies in reducing the impact of flood events and enhancing society’s resilience to climate change. His PhD research is part of the ACCREU project, a Horizon Europe project that aims to advance knowledge regarding climate change risk and adaptation, involving 15 European research institutions.
