Personal information

Miguel Barreda-Ángeles is a postdoctoral Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellow at the Department of Communication Science and the Network Institute at VU. He obtained his Ph.D. in Social Communication at Pompeu Fabra University (Barcelona, Spain), and his B.A. in Audiovisual Communication at University of Sevilla (Spain). Before moving to the VU, he worked as an advanced researcher at the Data Science & Big Data Analytics unit at Eurecat – Technology Centre of Catalonia, and as a researcher at the Perception & Cognition research group at Barcelona Media Innovation Center.

Research

My research interests focus on the psychological impact of new media technologies (and, particularly, Virtual Reality), and their possible applications for pro-social purposes. My research characterizes by a multidisciplinary approach that relies on the combination of self-report methods with psychophysiological (electrodermal activity, cardiac activity, EEG) and behavioral methods.

My current research project, funded by the European Commission through a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Individual Fellowship, aims at understating the potential of immersive nonfiction storytelling for changing beliefs and attitudes in the domains of refugees and climate change. Previously, I have been co-PI in a project on the use of VR for school bullying prevention, and I have participated as a researcher in several large research and innovation projects with European and national funding (e.g. i3Media, 2020-3D-Media, SCENE, SV3D, MoTiV, HATCH). I have also collaborated in several private research contracts with Spanish institutions and companies (e.g. Televisió de Catalunya, La Caixa, Barça Foundation). I have been involved, as an active member, in the COST Action 3D-ConTourNet and, currently, I am a member of the Coordination and Support action XR4ALL, funded by H2020.
