Personal information

Miriam Wijkman works as a research fellow at the VU School of Criminology, Faculty of Law, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, the Netherlands.  She graduated after finishing a Master in Law (with specializations in Civil Law and Criminology). Between 2005 and 2008 she worked as a junior-researcher at the Netherlands Institute for the Study of Crime and Law Enforcement (NSCR). Research activities focussed on the coordination and data-collection of a 5-generation-study (N> 6000) on the intergenerational transmission of delinquent behaviour, and on a longitudinal study among secondary school students that included data-collection on changes in delinquency and social networks among the students. In 2007 she started as a lecturer-researcher at the VU School of Criminology. In 2012, she finished her Master Developmental Psychology. She earned a PhD in 2014 from Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. For her PhD, she studied the offenders, criminal careers and co-offending patterns of adult and juvenile female sexual offenders. 

Member of the Global Criminoloy Network (GCN)
Member of A-LAB (Amsterdam Law and Behavior Institute), which carries out multidisciplinary research as an interfaculty collaboration of the various faculties within the Vrije Universiteit and the NWO institute NSCR.

Research

Her current research elaborates on her dissertation and involves offending pathways, risk assessment of women convicted of sexual offenses and offense characteristics of women convicted of child pornography offenses. Her other research interests include human trafficking and sexual exploitation, organised crime, gender and crime, and extremism/terrorism
