Nicolas Mattis is a PhD candidate at the department of Communication Science. He is studying news selection and exposure diversity in news recommender systems (NRSs). The goal of his research is to a) model individual news selection behaviour in NRSs and b) explore presentation strategies that could be used by the designers of such systems to facilitate exposure diversity while also taking into account potential backfire effects and ethical implications. His supervisors are Wouter van Atteveldt (Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam), Judith Möller (University of Amsterdam), and Philipp Masur (Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam). His research is part of the interdisciplinary project Rethinking news recommender algorithms: Nudging users towards diverse news exposure funded by NWO.
