Personal profile

Personal information

Omar Solinger is an associate professor in psychology at the department of Management and Organisation of the VU Amsterdam. He holds a PhD from the Maastricht University (2010).

Research

I am a broad-minded psychologist with an expertise in Management, theory development, and process research. This means that I am interested in why and how work-related phenomena (e.g., commitment, moral cognitions, leadership/followership) change over time. While change is infamously difficult to predict, I believe that there are regularities in how change happens (e.g., scenarios, scripts, generic trajectories of development) which we are now only beginning to discover. In addition to these themes, I personally think it is very important that we as Management scholars bring psychology-inspired concepts (e.g., leadership, commitment, psychological contract) closer the experience and knowledge/theory of organizations. This will make the research of psychologists working in the field of Management more relevant and important for society. I feel at home with the VU/SBE adagium "Science with purpose." My ideal research project is one where I engage with others to create substantive-methodological synergies, meaning innovative research where new theory is tested with innovate research methodologies – following the idea: “If you keep doing what you did, you keep getting what you got.” My research has been exposed in many high-impact journals, including Academy of Management Review, Organizational Research Methods, Journal of Applied Psychology, Organization Science, and Journal of Organizational Behavior. Finally, I am also active as reviewer on editorial boards of top-tier international journals, including Academy of Management ReviewJournal of Organizational Behavior, Human Resource Management Review, and Academy of Management Perspectives

Teaching

Next to my research duties, I am the initiator and coordinator of the Leadership and Change Management (LCM) master program, which is one of the five Business Administration master specializations at the Vrije Universiteit. The programme aims to build a new generation of leaders that will act as agents for positive social change in the world of business and beyond. It currently attracts around 100 students per year. I also teach a Theory development course (with Joep Cornelissen) which teaches Ph.D students and young faculty the craft of theorizing. I've also taught this course at Tritity college (Dublin), ESCP Business School (Paris), and FAPESP University of Sao Paolo.
