Since 1993 I have been doing research on religion, particularly in the Netherlands. My specific research aim was to understand the shaping of religion against the background of secularization. This has resulted in projects on religious experience in a Dutch charismatic-evangelical church (PhD, 2001), religious experience in Christian alternative spirituality, and ritual practice among Dutch mainline Protestants. I am involved in an ongoing team research concerning Evangelicals and their changing imaginaries in regard to the body, conversion, gender, and media.
Recently I have shifted my attention to methodological questions concerning the empirical study of religion, in dialogue with philosophy of science and systematic theology. Another recent research interest is the interdisciplinary field of (fantastic) film.
