Personal information

I am a Lecturer at the Department of Language, Literature, and Communication (see below for a list of courses I am teaching in 2019-2020). My PhD research, which I conducted at Tilburg University under the supervision of Prof Dr Marc Swerts and Dr Martijn Goudbeek, concerned the social and cultural aspects of smiles.

Research

Broadly speaking, my research interests lie in the areas of nonverbal communication and social perception. In my PhD research, I examined various factors that moderate people's display of smiles and perception of smiles. Such factors pertain to: the availability of contextual information (e.g., Is the way we perceive smiles influenced by our knowledge of the circumstances in which the smiles are displayed?), social situation (i.e., In cue-rich computer-mediated communication, do we smile more towards someone who is beaming with smiles? Do children smile more in the presence of a peer during gameplay?), and cultural background of the individuals involved.

Teaching

In 2019-2020, I am (co-)teaching the following courses:

- Introduction to Communication Studies

- Language in Social Media

- Genre Research

- Text and Image in News and Advertising

- Communication Cultures

- Persuasive Communication

- Language Policy in Organisations

- Media Use in Organisational Contexts
