Pim Klaassen, PhD, is assistant professor Science and Technology in Society at the Athena Institute for innovation and communication in the health and life sciences, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. His research interests are in governance towards and practices in Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI), and in methods and practices through which a diversity of values can be accommodated in complex contexts of transdisciplinary knowledge co-creation. Through his work hereon he aspires to contribute theoretically and practically to the development of innovative strategies and governance arrangements supporting environmental sustainability. Developing and mainstreaming creative ways to facilitate multi-stakeholder processes, knowledge co-creation, social change, collaborative reflection and mutual learning is at the heart of his research approach.

Pim Klaassen has (co-)authored articles on RRI, impacts of transdisciplinary knowledge production, researcher roles and responsibilities of academics to account for societal values, amongst other things. He coordinates and teaches in various MSc. and PhD courses, including ones on policy analysis and applied ethics. He coordinates the Policy track in the MSc. program Management, Policy analysis and Entrepreneurship in the Health and Life Sciences and PhD education in the Athena Graduate School. Since 2020 he is member of the Human Practices committee at the iGEM competition in synthetic biology.
