Pim van Tongeren is a researcher in the department of Environmental Policy Analysis of the Institute for Environmental Studies (IVM) at Vrije Universiteit (VU) Amsterdam.
He has a background in Environment and Resource Management from VU Amsterdam and International Business Administration from Tilburg University. His MSc thesis addressed the willingness to pay for nature-based solutions in Vietnam. More specifically, he looked into the differences that arise when using a monetary or time payment vehicle in a developing country context.
Currently, Pim is working on various studies related to Nexus Governance and Climate-Smart Agriculture.
This includes his role as a researcher in the SALAD project, a transcontinental research initiative addressing food security through climate-smart agriculture. SALAD focuses on developing innovative agricultural techniques to cultivate crops in saline environments, promoting sustainable farming practices in regions heavily affected by salinity.
In parallel, Pim serves as a case-study leader for RETOUCH NEXUS, where he focuses on integrated, innovative, and inclusive water governance schemes. This project aims to strengthen water security and build resilience to climate change by exploring the interconnections between water, food, and energy systems. By addressing these critical linkages, RETOUCH NEXUS develops climate-smart strategies that foster sustainable development and enhance the adaptive capacity of communities facing environmental challenges.
2021: MSc in Environment & Resource Management at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam.
2017: BSc in International Business Administration at Tilburg University.
