Personal information

From 1976 I have worked at the Vrije Universiteit of Amsterdam, predominantly as researcher and coordinator of the Jeugdinstituut VU, a research institute in the field of youth problems, youth welfare work and social work. During this time, I became interested in the experiences of young people with a multicultural background. From 2007 till 2013 I worked as a lecturer at the Center of Islamic Theology, with a main focus on this subject. From 2014 I am active as a co-supervisor of bachelor- and master theses at this center. In addition, I am carrying  out a research project about the authorship of the Heliand, a medieval gospel harmony in the vernacular.

The story of Bernlef, from ancient Frisia (ca. 800), is rather well-known: he was a minstrel of songs about battles of kings and acts of the ancestors, who was cured of blindness by the missionary Liudger. For a long time it was believed that none of his works survives. However, in 1965, Fon Weringha proposed the hypothesis that Bernlef was the poet of the Heliand, the epic poem about the life of Christ in the style of the traditional vernacular singers. To what extent can this hypothesis be verified? This is one of the themes of my research project about the Heliand.
