My research and teaching are focused on the development, assessment and treatment/support of autism. Since 2012, I (co)founded and direct the Netherlands Autism Register (NAR), www.nederlandsautismeregister.nl, a large longitudinal cohort of individuals with autism (n=3300) which is surveyed yearly. Our slogan is ‘together we know more’. I believe that the cross-pollination of knowledge and experience between scientists, clinicians and clinical groups improves the quality of research. My collaborations with clinicians and self-advocates with autism and parents/next of kin over the last 20 years have resulted in a wide range of deliverables, from applied projects on diagnostic tests, clinician bias, network analyses and e-health treatment, to fundamental projects using EEG and genetics. While I thoroughly acknowledge the limitations of autism, it is pivotal to improve our understanding of the diversity within the autism spectrum, including the positive features. This will create a balanced perspective on both strengths and weaknesses of autism, which hopefully will reduced stigma and increase societal inclusion. I teach at bachelor, master and research master levels, and am program director of the Research Master Clinical and Developmental Psychopathology (RMCDP). A key aim of my research and teaching is bridging the gap between science and society, through close collaboration with and individual dissemination of outcomes to affected individuals.
