Personal information

Sarah Lips is a researcher at the Athena Institute of the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. She graduated in Sociology in 2005 at the University of Amsterdam. She is passionate about understanding the relationship between broad societal developments and mental and physical personal health, and has been researching various subjects within this domain. Earlier, the focus was on subjects in the area of food and health, especially anorexia nervosa in male patients. She is currently working on several projects within the domain of pregnancy and childbirth, such as Northwest Netherlands Aligned and INCAS-2 (INtegrated CAre System).

Over the last decade, research has showed that the Dutch maternity care system could do better. One of the problem areas is discontinuity of care during pregnancy and childbirth. This is partly caused by the separation between the cultural, organizational and operational principles of primary and secondary/tertiary care, which is typical to the Dutch maternity care system. This can result in forgetting the common goal of health care professionals: healthy and happy parents and babies. A promising way to increase the quality of perinatal care is strengthening the cooperation between health care professionals. The action research Sarah is conducting is focusing on intensifying this cooperation and developing a more client centered approach, as means to innovate the maternity care system as a whole.
