Theo Groen graduated cum laude in Biochemistry at the University of Utrecht in 1979. Following his PhD work on changes in cell surface glycoproteins in tumor cells (1980-1984), he continued his research at the Academic Hospital in Utrecht in the fields of immunotherapy and simulation of tumor cells populations.
From 1986 to 1990 he worked as a system designer and information analyst for the ICT company Hoskyns Group plc.
From 1990 to 1994 he was consultant and later operational manager at Consultium, an interdisciplinary consultancy firm. From 1984 to 2011 he worked as an independent consultant in his private company Artylyse b.v., focusing on innovation processes and cooperation between research institutes, companies and government.
From 1994 until now he is founder and owner of Artylyse, a consultancy firm (active until 2013) focusing on the production process of scientific knowledge, innovation processes, interdisciplinarity, and the cooperation between universities, government and industry in their efforts to set up joint research programs and to apply knowledge. The consultancy activities covered a wide range of economic sectors, like health care, food & agriculture, social security, chemistry, ICT, water management and nanotechnology.
His roles as a consultant involved the total innovation cycle: to take early initiatives for new projects, to build bridges between participants, to define the content and structure of programs, to monitor projects, to coach program managers, to evaluate research and innovation projects and to develop tools for innovation policy. For the Institute Para Limes Foundation he explored the limits of interdisciplinary research in and around the field of complex adaptive systems.
He is (co-)author of several books about innovation and valorization of knowledge.
Since 2013 Theo Groen is involved in the educational activities of the Athena Institute as examinator, coordinator and/or lecturer in several courses and as coordinator of the Management & Entrepreneurship specialization.
