Tim Leijnse is a part-time PhD Candidate in the department of Water and Climate Risk of the Institute for Environmental Studies (IVM) at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. After finishing his MSc at the TU Delft he has been working at Deltares since 2018 as a coastal engineer, advising and researching topics regarding modelling compound flooding due to extreme events including tropical cyclones. Since then he has been involved in several national and international (e.g. Australia, Bangladesh, Caribbean, EU, India, Senegal, USA) projects, and has gained broad experience in the application and development of coastal modeling software (e.g. Delft3D, SFINCS, XBeach) in several coastal research topics including tropical cyclones, storm surges, wave propagation, compound flooding and coastal hazards.
As of September 2022, in his part-time PhD research he is working on improving large scale coastal flood risk assessments by including wave-driven components. Hereby he will couple a fast wave spectral model (Snapwave) with a fast-flooding model (SFINCS) to derive more realistic nearshore wave boundary conditions to force into the flooding model. Hereby, better assessments of coastal hazards and risks can be performed at larger scales. His work is part of the COASTMOVE project under Prof. Jeroen Aerts and Dr Sanne Muis.
