Personal information
Timo Hamers is an environmental toxicologist with training in environmental sciences, aquatic ecotoxicology and air pollution. His expertise lies in the application, development and optimization of small-scale in vitro bioassays to determine toxicity profiles of sets of individual compounds and complex environmental mixtures of pollutants as found in sediments, passive samplers, food items, and human samples. In addition, he applies these bioassays to steer chemical identification of bioactive emerging contaminants within effect-directed analysis (EDA) studies. In several international projects, he played an active role in the hazard assessment of persistent organic pollutants, pesticides, obesogens, flame retardants, and other house-dust pollutants with a special focus on endocrine disruption and neurotoxicity. He also actively contributed to the human and environmental risk assessment paragraphs of several EU-funded studies. He is a member of the OECD Thyroid Expert Group involved in the coordination of Test Guideline development for in vitro thyroid-related methods. In addition to his research activities, he is a lecturer in environmental toxicology in BSc, MSc, and PhD courses.
