Personal information

Tom is a PhD candidate in the department of Environmental Geography of the Institute for Environmental Studies (IVM) at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. He obtained his Bachelor degree in Environmental Engineering at the TU München, and continued there on the Master focusing on the Water-Energy-Food Nexus and Urban Water Engineering. During his Master’s Thesis he studied the new capital of Indonesia under construction and arranged Land Use Change and Urban Growth Models in the region of East Kalimantan after the relocation of the capital from Jakarta to the island of Borneo.

Currently, his PhD research focuses on Bayesian Network Models of Food Systems and Land use change. He will simulate impacts of changes in food systems – e.g. changes in regional nutrition schemes or a switch to urban farming – on land uses, by connecting a statistical approach to geospatial modelling.
