Personal information

I work as Lecturer in Academic English for the Academic Language Program (ALP) at the Department of Language, Literature & Communication teaching academic writing in a range of courses. Meanwhile, I am working on a book publication of my PhD thesis on the use of spatial metaphors to conceptualize new understandings of gender in Emily Dickinson's poetry.

Teaching

I teach classes in academic writing in English at Bachelor, Master and PhD level. I mostly teach within the Academic Language Program at the VU, but I also teach academic writing skills courses to first-year students at the Amsterdam University college (AUC) during the autumn semesters. In addition to that I work as a freelancer offering writing courses in English to students with various disciplinary backgrounds at Leiden University and in adult education.

Research

My background is in Literary Studies and I am interested in literary analysis that incorporates intersdisciplinary thinking,  especially from Gender Studies.  At the moment, I am working on turning my PhD thesis on Emily Dickinson's poetry into a book publication. My work on Dickinson shows how the poet uses spatial metaphors productively to create room beyond the confinement of patriarchal structures and to imagine a female identity that defies social and cultural definitions.
