Personal information

Dr. Valérie Duplat is Associate Professor of Strategy at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (SBE). Before joining the Vrije Universiteit, Valérie was a faculty member at the EDHEC Business School, France. She obtained her Ph.D. in Strategic Management from the Catholic University of Louvain, Belgium. During her Ph.D., Valérie visited the University of Maastricht for nine months and the University of Michigan for one year and a half. In June 2013, she obtained the Junior Faculty Award granted by the FNEGE (French Foundation for Management Education). Thanks to this Award, Valérie visited the Krannert School of Management, Purdue University, for six months in 2014. In 2016 and 2022, she visited the Univesrity of Colorado (Leeds School of Business).

Since September 2021, Valérie is coordinator of the Minor in Business Administration entitled "New Ways of Doing Business" at the VU Amsterdam. She has also acted as bachelor and master thesis coordinator in strategy and organization since 2016. 

In December 2023, she was appointed Associate Editor for Business Strategy & Organizational Theory for the European Management  Journal (https://www.sciencedirect.com/journal/european-management-journal).

 

 

Research

Valérie’s expertise lies in the design and management of inter-organizational partnerships, she also delves into the regional strategies of multinational enterprises. While engaged in these two research streams, she aims to further understand how the organizations are connected worldwide, and to identify ways to enhance connections among organizations, individuals, and teams on a global scale.

Currently, her research is specifically concentrated on the impact of institutions on regional strategies adopted by leading R&D-spenders. Additionally, she investigates practices used to manage inter-organizational conflicts and disputes.

Her research has been published in Human Relations, Global Strategy Journal, Research Policy, Long Range Planning, and Small Business Economics.

Valérie is an active member of the VU Knowledge Hub for Ecosystems (link) and the VU Knowledge Hub for Global Business Development (link)

 

She is currently co-supervising the PhD process of four PhD candidates:

•    Xuejing Yang (4th year PhD, innovation, and globalization) – ESCP Business School – co-supervision with Régis Coeurderoy 
•    Elvis Ngah (4th year PhD, IT outsourcing relations and relational dynamics) – Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam – co-supervision with Brian Tjemkes and Henri Dekker  
•    Duong Nguyen (2nd year PhD, sustainability, innovation, and globalization) – ESCP Business School – co-supervision with Régis Coeurderoy 
•    Chaouki Kouriti (1st year PhD, blockchain and strategy) – DIEM project on eco-system management – co-supervision with Oli Mihalache, Brian Tjemkes and Ard-Pieter de Man 

 

 

Teaching

Valérie has been teaching courses on Corporate and Business Strategies (MSc), M&A and Strategic alliances (MSc), International Business Management (MSc and BSc) and Organizational theory (BSc). In each of her courses, Valérie links theory and practice by organizing consulting projects with real-world companies. Executives from leading companies such as Philips Lighting, Jumbo, Dailymotion, FrieslandCampina, ING, Picnic and NLC (heathtech incubator in Amsterdam) have been invited to her courses.

She has taught at EDHEC Business School, Louvain School of Management, EMLyon Casablanca, and VU Amsterdam at the bachelor, master and executive levels.

Valérie obtained two teaching qualifications:
2023    Senior Teaching Qualification – certification for coordination and management skills in education for lecturers at Dutch Universities
2019    University Teaching Qualification – certificate for teaching quality for lecturers at Dutch Universities
