Willemijn Born is a lecturer and PhD candidate at the Criminal Law and Criminology department, Faculty of Law. After completing a bachelor in Criminology (with a double minor in Peace & Conflict Studies and Sociology, at University at Buffalo, USA) at VU University Amsterdam, Willemijn Born obtained a master degree in International Crimes, Conflict and Criminology (cum laude) at the VU. During the course of her studies, Willemijn worked at Dutch peace organization PAX, Amnesty International and the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Willemijn also obtained several research positions at the Dutch Centre for Crime and Law Enforcement (NSCR) and the Centre for International Criminal Justice (CICJ). After her studies, Willemijn started as a lecturer at VU Amsterdam, teaching the courses 'Political Violence and the Human Condition', 'Criminology', 'Qualitative Research Skills' and 'Sociology'.
Willemijn's PhD research focusses on nonviolent resistance in post-soviet regimes. Read more about this research project here.
Currently, Willemijn is also an independent protest observer for Amnesty International.
