Personal profile

Research

I am post-doctoral researcher at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (Department of Arts and culture, History, Ancient Studies / CLUE+).

My current research focuses on pottery production and consumption, potters’ mobility and human dynamics between mother-cities, colonial establishments and the native milieu in Greece and in Southern Italy-Sicily. My project, “Pots & Pans: analysis and comparison of pottery production and consumption in ancient Greek mother-cities and in indigenous and colonial communities in Italy (ca 800-550 BC)”, combines macroscopic approaches, literature study of ethnoarchaeological research, experimental reconstructions, and ceramic analysis.

It is part of the NWO-funded project (no. VC.GW17.136), directed by Prof. J. P. Crielaard, entitled: “What went into the melting pot? Land-use, agriculture, and craft production as indicators for the contributions of Greek migrants and local inhabitants to the so-called Greek colonization in Italy (ca. 800-550 BC)”. This project combines trans-disciplinary synergy of scientific analyses of ancient craft-products, bio- and geoarchaeology, landscape-modelling, and international scholarly collaboration to make decisive contributions to the debate on ancient Mediterranean migration.
