Mr. dr. Yannick van den Brink is Universitair Hoofddocent Straf(proces)recht aan de Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. Hij is tevens als Rubicon Research Fellow verbonden aan de University of Cambridge, Institute of Criminology (Verenigd Koninkrijk). Daarnaast is hij werkzaam als rechter-plaatsvervanger bij de Rechtbank Den Haag.
Van den Brink publiceert en geeft onderwijs over diverse thema’s gerelateerd aan het jeugdstrafrecht, strafrecht, criminologie en kinder- en mensenrechten. Zijn onderzoek kenmerkt zich door een multidisciplinaire benadering en richt zich op de betekenis van fundamentele rechtsbeginselen in besluitvorming in de (jeugd)strafrechtsketen.
Eerder was Van den Brink universitair docent Jeugdrecht en Strafrecht aan de Universiteit Leiden (2016-2021). Ook was hij visiting researcher bij Northwestern University School of Law (Chicago, VS; 2013), het Equal Justice Initiative (NYU Legal Clinic, Montgomery, VS; 2015) en het Max Planck Institute for Foreign and International Criminal Law (Freiburg, Duitsland; 2016).
Van den Brink behaalde zijn bachelor Rechtsgeleerdheid (2009, cum laude), master Strafrecht (2011, cum laude) en master Criminologie (2012, cum laude) aan de Universiteit Utrecht en zijn Ph.D. (2018) aan de Universiteit Leiden.
Dr. Yannick van den Brink is an Associate Professor of Criminal Law and Criminal Procedure at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. He is also a Rubicon Research Fellow at the University of Cambridge, Institute of Criminology (United Kingdom). In addition to his academic work, Van den Brink serves as a deputy judge in the Youth Court of the District Court of The Hague.
Van den Brink publishes and teaches widely on themes related to youth justice, criminal justice, criminology, children’s rights and human rights. His research deploys a multidisciplinary approach to study the meaning of fundamental rights and principles in decision-making in youth justice and criminal justice.
Previously, Van den Brink was an assistant professor of Child Law and Criminal Law at Leiden University (2016-2021). He was also a visiting researcher at Northwestern University School of Law (Chicago, US; 2013), the Equal Justice Initiative (NYU Legal Clinic, Montgomery, US; 2015) and the Max Planck Institute for Foreign and International Criminal Law (Freiburg, Germany; 2016).
Van den Brink holds a LL.B. degree in Dutch Law (2009, cum laude), a LL.M. degree in Criminal Law (2011, cum laude) and a MA degree in Criminology (2012, cum laude) from Utrecht University, and a PhD degree in Law (2018) from Leiden University.
