Ype H. Poortinga studied experimental psychology and psychometrics at the VU University in Amsterdam, where he obtained a Doctorate in the Social Sciences (1971) on research conducted in Southern Africa. He is emeritus professor of cross-cultural psychology at Tilburg University in the Netherlands, and at the Catholic University of Leuven in Belgium. Currently he enjoys hospitality arrangements with Tilburg University and the Vrije Universiteit (VU University) in Amsterdam.

His most consistent research interest has been the question of valid comparison of psychological data obtained in different populations. He has also written on theoretical issues in cross-cultural psychology. His empirical work has dealt with a variety of topics in cross-cultural research, including information transmission, basic personality variables, emotions and social psychological variables, in societies as far apart as Southern Africa, India, Indonesia and Mexico. His experience in applied fields includes program evaluation, test development and adaptation, and intercultural communication training.

He has been active in various organizations of psychologists, such as the International Test Commission (ITC, President 1976-1978 and Fellow), the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology (IACCP, President 1988-1990 and Honorary Member), the Netherlands Institute of Psychologists, NIP, (President 1987-1990) and the European Federation of Psychologists Associations, EFPA, (President, 1990-1993).
