Leveraging Artificial Intelligence for Sustainable Space Security - European Insights

PrizeAcademic

Description

The Russian-Ukrainian conflict has had a devastating effect in multiple domains and industries. Its impact did also not remain unnoticed in space related activities. For example, the future of the International Space Station, a symbol of international collaboration, started to be questioned when Russia announced it will exit the project in 2024.
The introduction of new technologies, such as artificial intelligence (AI), adds even more complexity to the current geopolitical environment, and it is influencing the balance of powers in the space military domain. Given such multifaceted ecosystem, it becomes extremely important to analyse how the global powers will position themselves. Specifically, what will be the role of Europe in ensuring sustainable space security?
The aim of this project is to include on the international research agenda a new approach to space, security and artificial intelligence. Such concepts are usually treated separately by different parts of the legal doctrine (e.g. space law scholars, security scholars and technology law scholars), leading to fragmentation and only partial solutions.
However, as this unique project will demonstrate, the three concepts are intertwined requiring a multidisciplinary holistic approach.
Duration: 2022 - 2023.
