Project Details
Description
The EU-LIFE funded CO-ACT project will support cities and urban municipalities to make neighbourhoods climate-resilient through coordinated blue-green infrastructure on both public and private land. In these neighbourhoods, nearly all precipitation will be retained locally, reducing flood and drought risks in extreme weather situations. At the same time, smart greening will mitigate urban heat peaks, boost biodiversity and improve air quality. The project will develop a practical implementation roadmap that guides local authorities. This roadmap will be tested, refined and validated at two pilot sites: one in Belgium in an urban municipality near Brussels, the other one in a suburb of the city of Alkmaar in the Netherlands.
Together with KU Leuven, the Vlaamse Milieumaatschappij and the municipality of Alkmaar, VU Amsterdam will monitor and evaluate the environmental and social impacts of the interventions implemented through the LIFE CO-ACT project. Results will be fourfold:
• Assessment of the environmental impact of implemented measures in the pilot areas, including effects on water management, heat
management, biodiversity and air quality.
• Evaluation of social outcomes, such as citizen engagement, behavioural change, public support, and perceived improvements in liveability.
• Integration of the collected data into the existing VMM platforms and into the Digital Twin and Climate Adaptation Monitor (Alkmaar)
• A solid base to refine the implementation roadmap and replicable methodologies for other cities aiming to monitor adaptation efforts.
