Music360 (Horizon Europe)

Project: Research

Project Details

Description

The Music360 project is an EU-funded project that investigates the value of music. The focus is on background music in public venues such as restaurants, shops, and bars, with streaming music. We also look into the use of live music to address stress and anxiety during the treatment of cancer with chemotherapy.

Also, the project builds a large-scale collection system, which contains rightsholders (e.g., performers and authors), the recordings and works they created, and when and where their music is played. Also, revenue associated with the plays is available in the platform, so that the rightsholder can see their earnings. For venues like shops and restaurants, an experimentation toolkit is developed, such that the research done can be easily replicated in other venues.

We also developed a method and associated software tooling to analyse the music ecosystem at a system level, which goes beyond the individual level. This is particularly useful for policymakers to understand the impact of their decisions. As an example, we used the approach to evaluate the consequences of the verdict of the European High Court concerning the RAAP/PPI case. In short, this is about the requirement that non-EU artists get paid if their music is played in Europe, even if their own country does not collect fees for the use of music in their own country.

The Music360 consortium consists of 10 partners, including a number of Collective Management Organizations, a company to fingerprint and identify music, a company who analyses digital ecosystems, and two research universities.
