Description
Tapping Untapped Potential project, which explores challenges and opportunities for recruiting status holders (individuals with refugee status who are allowed to work in the Netherlands) in the Dutch long-term sector.
The Dutch long-term care sector (LTC) faces increasing staff shortages. These shortages are the result of the so-called ‘dubbele vergrijzing.’ A growing part of our population lives longer, has more complex care needs and uses care services longer. Simultaneously, ageing also affects the sector’s workforce: more people are retiring while fewer are entering. Our project addresses this challenge by exploring the potential of recruiting people from migrant groups, like status holders who want to work in the Dutch LTC sector, particularly those who are healthcare professionals in their country of origin. Tapping this currently untapped potential would help fill the workforce gap and provide a pathway for refugee integration and social inclusion.
However, the circumstances for employment for status holders have challenges, like the far-right solid anti-migrant attitude taking shape in the Netherlands and Europe (as seen in recent elections). Even when they are eventually hired, status holders may face other less visible yet significant problems, such as implicit or explicit anti-immigrant attitudes, a lack of a full understanding of their needs and challenges and consequently, a lack of support.
